By NaTyshca Pickett

International Yoga Day, which takes place on June 21st, honors the mental, physical, and spiritual benefits that yoga has provided to people all around the world. Even though it's a great way to stay in shape, millions of people take part in and practice it on a regular basis. For many, these rituals represent a time-honored method of re-establishing a connection between body, mind, and spirit.

HOW INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY CAME TO BE

In India, yoga is regarded as an ancient discipline that dates back more than 5,000 years. Yogis believe that the mind, body, and soul all work together to achieve enlightenment. People in the West began using it as a way to exercise and unwind, with claims that it may heal injuries and relieve chronic pain and discomfort.

Asoke Kumar Mukerji, India's Ambassador to the United Nations, sponsored a resolution to designate June 21 as International Yoga Day during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014.

The Summer Solstice, which occurs on June 21 every year, was chosen as the date since it is the longest day of the year. In total, 177 countries supported the resolution, making it the most co-sponsored resolution in the history of the United Nations.

The first International Yoga Day was held in New Delhi on June 21, 2015, when almost 36,000 people, including Prime Minister Modi, and many other high-profile political figures from around the world, performed 21 asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes.
